Three Sympathies
video, custom code
Sympathetic vibration is when an object vibrates in the presence of a nearby wave that has the same frequency. The typical examples are a resonating guitar string, an opera singer shattering a glass, or the Tacoma Narrows Bridge flying apart in the wind. But what about when a human body is the resonant cavity?
This is a study for an installation using three vertical monitors, each of which filters the video based on a specific wave pattern of the human body.
The breath, moving in and out in steady waves, the rhythmic staccato of the heart, the central nervous system, vibrating as it senses, the neural oscillations deep in the brain that power consciousness, sleep, memory, attention. These rhythms bind us to each other and to the similarly vibrant world in which we live, yet we rarely take the time to study how these waves harmonize or clash, which ones amplify, which ones soften.
