This series was originally developed for a show featuring only postcard-sized work; each of these is only 6” x 4”. I used a combination of Sumi ink, water, and a laser cutter modified to use a pen. I wrote custom code to drive the plotter, moving the pen in miniscule, rectilinear detail through the wet ink and water. This creates almost a negative drawing, as ink from the pen washes away and it acts more like a plow, pushing ink away.

Once the prints dried, I came back with a pen to add details and find creatures hidden in the nebulous forms, building in each image a tiny universe of ghostly machine traces nestled into layers of clouds.
